Q:

What is considered the first day of my period?

Ever since I had myson (first child) my period has been different. It's regular but it takes 2-3 days to get going; barely noticeable spotting before the normal flow. Is this normal and which day is considered the first day of my period when the spotting begins or when the blood starts flowing. Thanks in advance!

I know that gets tricky, and I assumed you needed to know the "exact" date for a reason! I had my first very strange period as you describe when I was TTC (one entire week of spotting, followed by another week of "normal" period)...and of course, that was the last period before I actually did conceive. I just told my OB/GYN both dates, and we went from there. That was 2 years ago, and I believe she wrote down the first date (the spotting date) as my LMP..just one woman's experience...your's could be different!

Just be sure to write both dates down, and if they are just a few days apart, I assume they would go with the first date of spotting.

Good luck!

Yes, actually most women's periods can be described by light spotting for a day or two, followed by heavier bleeding for 3-4 days, with it tapering off again into lighter bleeding/spotting for another 2-3 days.

You can keep track of your periods with noting the first day you experience spotting, and then also track when you begin heavy bleeding, and you will notice over the next 3-4 months what your normal cycle is! As far as when your actual start date on your period is, I assume once you track your period after the next 3-4 months (listing both possible start dates of spotting and flow), it will become apparent when your start date is (or a rough estimate...that's OK to be a day or two "off", as it will change over time).

Does that help?

Thank you for your quick response! The reason for my question is that we are trying for #2 and I need to know my period start in order to track my ovulation cycles. My husband is mostly gone during the week so knowing when I am ovulating would be great so he could make sure to be home. Again, thank you for all your help!
