What could be the cause of pain on the outer left edge of my left foot?

Pain is pretty much in center of left side. It hurts to walk on it, is very sore to the touch, & feels like there is a lump in there. The sore spot is actually a bit more toward top side of foot than toward soul of foot. What caused it, & how do I 'help' heal it? Thanks.
