Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Thank you for reaching out to our community for help.

A physician prescribed pain medication, but did he or she indicate what might be causing the pain?

You mention that sometimes, you might not have a bowel movement for three days. Have you mentioned this to your physician?

To help figure out what is causing the left upper quadrant abdominal pain, let's look at what organs are located in that part of the body.

The stomach is located under the lower left ribs at the front of the body and extends toward the middle of the upper abdomen. Stomach ulcers and gastritis, which is inflammation of the stomach lining are possible causes of the pain.

A portion of the large intestine called the transverse colon crosses the upper abdomen, passing below the stomach on the left side of the body. Severe constipation can cause left upper quadrant abdominal pain. Other causes include diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome and colon cancer.

Anonymous, have you been evaluated by a gastroenterologist?

The left chest and left upper quadrant of the abdomen are separated by the diaphragm, the large muscle that helps move air into and out of the lungs. The heart and left lung are located here. A cardiac evaluation along with imaging of your left lung should be done.

The spleen is high in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen, near the top of the stomach. The The upper end of the left kidney is within the lower end of the rib cage at the rear of the body. An infection or stone involving the left kidney typically causes moderate to severe pain of the left flank, commonly extending into the left upper quadrant and left groin.

Anonymous, when did this pain start?

Regards,
Maryann
