Q:

What do dermatologists think about microderm abrasion, buffing or exfoliating?

There are so many commercials and different product lines, that I am really trying to decide where best to spend my money and have the healthiest skin.

I assume dermatologists would just say to use an approved, mild facial cleanser and daily moisturizer with SPF 30+...and that's all you need.

What about all the other products to help exfoliate, buff or otherwise "improve" your skin and protect it from further damage or aging appearance? IS mircroderm abrasion helpful or a scam?

thanks!

Hi there Connie, We forwarded your question to Dr. Laurie Bernard and here's what she had to say ...

"Truth be told, a mild cleanser and a daily moisturizer containing sunscreen ARE the 2 most important products for your skin. As we age, though, it's worth considering an additional product that can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This is best accomplished with a night cream containing Retinol, which is a form of Vitamin A. Retinol-based products help improve your complexion and prevent future fine lines and wrinkles. This would be used in place of an "exfoliator", as this is essentially what the Retinol is accomplishing. Microdermabrasion is a treatment that acts similarly on the skin, but multiple, usually expensive, treatments are required to maintain the benefits to your complexion."
