I just found out that my progesterone level is in the single digits (I don't know the exact number yet). What does anyone know about low progesterone levels? what should I be concerned about? What are the treatment options for this?

ok, I have a problem I need solving!!!!! I am currently taking Pristiq 100 mgs...now weaning off of it to Leaxpro and Edronax ( i live in Aus.).....anywy the Pristiq is just not doing it for me....ok, SO, with this I also take a 50 mg capsule of natural progesterone at night and a half of a mL of testosterone cream in the morning ( this is a cream)....I take these because I have estrogen dominance---low prog levels and low testoterone levels....they both have come up a bit, but I am still having very heavy periods and sometimes my period comes on Days 24-26...instead of usually the day 28........NOW, i ahve tried to take more progesterone, but everytime itry to take more, i get depressed and tired.....Here is the million dollar question: DO YOU THINK BECAUSE MY SEROTONIN LEVELS ARE LOW RIGHT NOW, EVEN BEING ON THE PRISTIQ THEY ARE, THAT IS WHY IAM SWITCHING MEDS, THAT MY BODY CANNOT HANDLE MORE PROGESTERONE YET BECAUSE OF THIS???? SEROTONIN BEING LOW = BODY CANNOT HANDLE MORE PROGESTERONE AND THAT IS CAUSING WORSENING OF DEPRESSION........I THINK I CLEARLY NEED A LITTLE MORE PROGESTERONE TO HELP THE HEABY PERIODS...WHAT DOU THINK??????? I am in such a blahhhhhs state...coming off of pristiq and all...cannot wait to feel better in my mind and menstrual life!!!!!!!!

Gblondie,

I'm so sorry you're dealing with depression and with hormonal issues. The two together really affect a woman's life in so many, many ways.

My advice is this: Because the Pristiq did not work for you and you are weaning off of it to two other medicines, you need to keep everything else stable right now. You need to let the new anti-depressant medicine have a chance to work so that you'll know what effect it has. If you start trying to change up other things on your own, you won't know what was because of the new meds and what was because of the change in hormones.

And then after the new meds get established in your body and you know what effect they are having, then revisit the doctor who has prescribed the natural progesterone and testosterone cream and see if those levels need to be changed at all. Don't do this on your own, Gblondie, OK?

I understand your blahhhhhhs state, coming off the Pristiq and waiting for the other meds to kick in. I also have dealt with depression and know what it's like. But our hormones are very tricky things, and you don't want to be changing too much at once.

Does that make sense? Will you wait until the meds kick in, and then go back and talk to the doctor who is treating your estrogen dominance to see if your hormone medicines need to be changed?

Hi Diane.....well, back on Pristiq again....the other combos and I even tried Effexor was not ood....felt awful and tired....so, I am going to try 50mgs of Pristiq with 1mg of Edronax to see if a little serotonin with a lot more norepinephrine will pull me out into the real world again...I cannot tolerate high doses of the Edronax, so I am seeing if a low dose add on to the starting dose of Pristiq will help...I know this will take a couple weeks to see if at all it helps...just took the first dose of 1mg Edronax this morning...have been back on Pristiq for 2 weeks.....it seems when I try to upp my Pristiq dose to 100mgs, which is what I took before, it makes me more tired....I think it is the extra serotoni that comes along with the extra norepinephrine that gives me the tiredness.....that is why I am thinking that the 50mg dose of Pristiq WITH ONLY some extra Norepinephrine may be the answer.....I was thinking of adding on Wellbutrin to this, but I had a seizure when I was 8 yrs. old and they say if u ever had a seizure, Wellbutruin should not be taken.....I was tested for everything under the sun and nothing came up wrong....just a fluke incident that occurred around the time I was switching from an all girls school to a co-ed school......I believe high anxiety may have been the cause......never had another one in my life...knock on wood!!!! But I do have a high anxiety level that I now control with AD's......and xanax! Ok, let me know your thoughtts on this.....I still feel foggy, not so depressed, not having anxiety, but not myself...I don't really leave the house much, no motivation to exercise, put on makeup, look nice....I am hoping I get pulled out of this because this is not me at all....I used to be vibrant, showered everyday, cared about the way I looked.......I am not that woman anymore and that alone makes me very sad.....I wake up everyday tired.....takes naps often.....I pray that one day God lifts me out if this funk and puts me on a positive, happy road...like I know I could be......I watch my neighbor who is my age with 2 kids everyday, have vibrant energy, a good work ethic a get up and go attitude and I want that...so badly.....everyday is such an effort...I want my energy to be effortless again.....pray for me Diane...I really need it......love, b.

I can totally relate to this - worth you checking out the website for the most amazing hormone specialist who is in Australia but has an internet consultation service for anyone who resides overseas or interstate and cannot physically get to consult with him in person. His name is Dr Graeme Williams and his website is www.ehormones.com.au - Dr Williams is like having your own personal pool man, he balances your homones just like the pool man balances the ph levels in your swimming pool so it does not go green! Within 3 months of applying the progesterone cream tailor made for you - the mood swings, anxiety, sleepless ness, depression, headaches will subside and once your progesterone is level with your oestrogen, you should naturally then start producing more testosterone which will give you back your energy, your zip, your libido and fat burning - this could be your answer and it is worth checking out to get back to the happy vibrant person you used to be. Good Luck

Hi there! I was just reading your comments and I am 29 years old and was started on Metformin back in March. I haven't had a period since 11/08 and finally had one on my own April 13. So I had a day 21 progesterone done and it was 1.2. So, that pretty much means on not ovulating? Is that correct?

Hi there I am 25 and been trying for over a year to get pregnant. My levels after a blood test by my doctor is 1.2 as well. :( This means we are not ovulating! They want me to start Clomid. I havent started yet but im hopeful we really cant get much lower with our levels so we can only go up :)

Hi, Anon. Thank you for your question!

Based on the progesterone number of 1.2 on day 21, I'd guess that you were correct in thinking that you did not ovulate. Here are "normal" progesterone levels in women, keeping in mind that we are all different:

Day 1-14 of monthly cycle
1 to 1.5 ng/ml

Day 15-28 of monthly cycle
2-28 ng/ml

Are you trying to conceive? Taking your basal temperature can also help you figure out when, or whether, you are ovulating. Do you know how to do this?

You mention Metformin; are you diabetic? May I ask why you were having your progesterone tested? What did your doctor say about the low levels?

Hi Diane
I have recently had my day 21 test which i had done 6 days after my ovulation test showed positive, my results came back with 7.8 progesterone level does this mean i did not ovulate so therfore can't be pregnant? Thanks Dawny

No. A progesterone level above 3-6ng/ml indicates ovulation.

Hi Pat
Thankyou for your reply i have been to see the gyno today to ask if i could have clomid again as i needed it to conceive last time, i am now 37yrs and am worried about time? He has said that he won't give me it as there is no evidence to state that i am not ovulating although my doctor said my prog level was 7.8 and it should be above 10mls? I am very confused and upset as i only needed clomid for 2 mths last time and i missed a month and got pregnant. I would like to know if i should ask for a second opinion or not? Many thanks Dawny
