Assuming you are a woman (therefore ruling out anything prostate related), you may be experiencing something called "proctalgia fugax" which are spasms in the anus and symptoms include shooting and stabbing pains - usually just for a minute or two and can come and go. It's thought this happens due to a malfunction in the sphincter muscle.

Does it happen at night as well as during the day, even while sleeping?

There is no cure for this but heat is a good treatment (baths, sitting on a hot water bottle) and drinking coffee as soon as a bout starts also helps because caffeine seems to stop the pain. Botox shots are used by some. Massage to the anus also helps.

By the way, proctalgia fugax is actually not uncommon and happens in women more than men.
