Guide

Worldwide, the most common cause of goiter is a lack of iodine in the diet. However, in the United States and other countries where most people use iodized salt, goiter is more often due to an overactive or under active thyroid gland or because of nodules that develop in the thyroid gland.

Do you know the cause of your goiter? Has your doctor recommended any type of treatment?

If your goiter is caused by your diet, you need to ensure that you get enough iodine. Use iodized salt, unless you are on a sodium-restricted diet. Check with your doctor, first. Seaweed, shrimp and other shellfish are high in iodine.

Though uncommon, getting too much iodine sometimes leads to goiter. Again, check with your doctor before increasing your iodine intake.

I hope I have answered your question,
