What foundations are safe for acne prone skin? How can I avoid clogging my pores with face make up?

Hi Nina and thanks for bringing your question to EmpowHER.

There are a number of things that someone concerned about acne - and anyone who has sensitive skin or is concerned about skin health - can look for in choosing foundations.

Looking at the ingredients is absolutely critical, and it may take some time and detective work. Foundation, as well as all other make up products, including powder, blush and eye-shadow, should ideally be hypoallergenic and oil free. Look for “noncomedogenic” on the label, which means it should not clog your skin’s pores.

The first ingredient listed for a liquid foundation should be water. If you pick up a product and find that the ingredient list contains mostly long chemical names that you don't recognize then it's probably not going to be a good product for you.

There is more and more recognition of the need for cosmetic products that don't harm or irritate the skin, so there are more options today for you than in the past and you will hopefully find a foundation that best meets your needs.

Let us know what you find and how it works, okay?

Best,

Pat
