What happens if you take 3 of your birth control pills at once?

I was wondering what happens if you forgot to take 2 of your birth control pills and you decide to take three of them in one dose without calling your doctor first? The birth control pill that I am currently taking is Yasmin.

I did something similar. Finals were this week and I was not in my normal frame of mind. (They're over, thankfully!) Today is Friday and I just realized that forgot Wednesday's and Thursday's pill. I usually take them at 6pm as well. It was 3:05pm when I realized. Well I took two pills immediately. But what about the third? I never heard of 3 being advisable, so I called my pharmacist and she said to take *only* two pills today. Two more tomorrow and thereafter just one like normal. But consider using a condom or another backup contraception for up to one week after the missed pills. So from today until next Friday, I'll be using condoms to prevent any pregnancy. Oh, and I hope I don't spot like mentioned above. Hope my experience helps too.

most birth control pills have both estrogen and progesterone in them. the progesterone is the hormone that stops you from ovulating, so taking too much of that will not have any serious side effects, but when you take too much estrogen, your body cannot handle it and that is what makes you feel nauseous and vomit afterwards.

Hi Samantha,
Thank you for sharing your story and I am sorry to hear that you got so sick. If you have any concerns about taking your Pills...call your Pharmacist...he/she will be able to give you advice on your certain medication. I am wondering what your concern is now that you have continued to take your pill. Can you be more specific with your question?

Thanks, Missie

Hi again. Since you took three pills already, call your Pharmacist. There shouldn’t be any concern about an overdose, but he/she will be able to tell you if you are able to continue the pill or if you need to stop and start a new pack.

I hope this helps. Please come back and let us know what your Pharmacist says. Good luck!

Hello here's an update. I called the pharmacist and he told me that I took too long taking the pills I missed and that I should just continue the rest of the pack and use a secondary precaution for the rest of the month. I also called Poison Control and they told me that it wouldn't hurt me if I took too many birth control pills, but there might be some spotting or getting my period. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.

Hey! I need some help with a similar issue. I took way too many Yasmin pills together (more than 4). Tried to call the doctor before taking them, couldnt reach her for more than a day, panicked that I forgot to take the pills and finally with all the confusion just ate them all. Should I be concerned? I started bleeding after a few hours of taking the pills. Now am not sure whether its my period or its just bleeding between the periods....this has never happened before.....

Hi KGregory,

For the Yasmin pill, the specific information about missed dose is as follows:

What happens if I miss a dose?
Missing a pill increases your risk of becoming pregnant.

If you miss one"active" pill, take the dose as soon as you remember or take two pills at the time of your next regularly scheduled dose. You do not need to use backup birth control.

If you miss two"active" tablets in a row in week one or two, take two tablets each for the next two regularly scheduled doses (one missed tablet plus one regularly scheduled tablet for 2 days in a row). Use another form of birth control for at least 7 days following the missed tablets.

If you miss two "active" tablets in a row in week three, or if you miss three tablets in a row during any of the first 3 weeks, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new package on the same day if you are a Day 1 starter. If you are a Sunday starter, keep taking a pill every day until Sunday.

On Sunday, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new pack of pills that same day. You may not have a period that month, but this is expected. However, if you miss your period 2 months in a row, call your doctor because you might be pregnant.

If you miss one of the reminder pills in week four, skip that dose and take the next one as directed.

If you miss a pill, you may become pregnant if you have sex in the 7 days after your missed pill. You MUST use another birth control method (such as condoms or spermicides) as a back-up for those 7 days.

I have never seen a time where you should be taking three pills at a time, so you can take two in one day and two the following day to catch up. Do not take three in one day. I hope this information helps. Please let us know if there is any additional information that you need.

Should it be something I should be concerned about? I see where it says if you miss two "active" pills and what I should do, but since I took three pills in one day, should I only take one tomorrow?
