What is the likelyhood that ovarian cysts will return?

I apologize.. this will be kind of long. About 3 years ago, when I was 18 I started having severe lower abdominal pain. After visiting many doctors with no success, I finally found a doctor who actually listened to my symptoms. I had a complex ovarian cyst which measure about 5 inches in diameter. I had laparoscopic surgery in September 07. My left ovary and tube was removed in addition to the cyst because the cyst was wrapped around my ovary. A few months later in Janaury 08 I started having severe lower abdominal pain again and had emergency exploratory surgery. This time no cyst was found but my appendix was removed. I was put on lo seasonique birth control to help with my bad cramps and to regulate my period, but after 2 years with no change in either, I stopped taking it. I've been off the birth control for about 8 months now and still have irregular periods (ranging from every 2 weeks to every 2 months..). This past weekend I had a familiar pain come back... the severe lower abdominal pain accompanied with lower back pain. My gyn isn't available until later this week but I'm worried about going through the same thing I went through 3 years ago. What is the likelyhood that an ovarian cyst will return? I'm not paranoid but I do want to have kids some day and I worry about these things because I only have my right ovary. I went to righttime medical care over the weekend and explained my history to the doctor, but because of my age the doctor brushed it off and didn't take me seriously (just like before the cyst was discovered in 07)... Thanks for any help.

Thanks! I'll be seeing my gyn soon and I know he will listen to me. A good doctor actually listens to you. Hopefully it's nothing serious. Thank you for the links! I'll definitely look into them. =]

beaglelover24 - First, there's no need to apologize, you've provided a lot of detail and helpful information, and it's also clear that you are interested in protecting your health and know your body well. Good for you!

In terms of your question, yes, ovarian cysts can recur, but be aware also that new ones can form.

Severe lower abdominal pain accompanied with lower back pain definitely needs to be checked out by your doctor. Until you have this properly reviewed, however, it's really not clear whether an ovarian cyst is the cause.

No doctor should brush you off as you're discussing your medical history and concerns, no matter what your age is. Being treated in a dismissive manner while you're in pain does nothing to help the diagnostic or healing process, does it?

I'm going to provide some links to information on ovarian cysts so that you can learn more, have them on hand it you need them and continue the process of educating yourself. Let me know how your appointment goes, and if I can help you further. All the best to you, and keep standing up for yourself!
