What specific blood tests are needed to check for elevated levels of cortisol? How is that treated?

I have been under great stress recently and have noticed that 1- I cannot get my weight to budge. 2- I am having more night sweats and hot flashes despite increasing my bio-identical estrogen and progesteerone creams. Can elevated cortisol be the problem? If so, what to do, I am aleady taking Armour thyroid daily.

Dear Anon, stress is the trigger for many conditions that affect the normal functioning of the body. I am wondering if you have considered stress reduction techniques? We have a society that overloads their bodies with drugs when the body has the potential to respond nicely to many healing modalities that address the root causes of stress. I assume from your posting that you are going through either perimenopause or menopause. Hormonal changes will bring about many changes in your body and stress reduction techniques will help you transition into the next phase of your womanhood in a more healthy way. Cortisol levels can be tested very easily but learning they are high is not going to help unless you learn to lower this hormone. The best way to lower cortisol is by elevating your DHEA levels. You can try supplements of DHEA but I would recommend getting a coritsol level test done first. Also try tai-chi, yoga, meditation or breathing exercises to counteract the effects of stress and naturally lower your cortisol production.
