Which is better for muscle recovery after running: hot or cold/ice bath?

I run about 6 miles every other day, outside, and the current temperatures are still around 100 degrees when I go. Is it better to use heat or cold to treat the muscles to improve recovery and reduce soreness the next day?

Hi Sharon

Thanks for your question - it's a great one!

You should be icing after running, not heating. Heating should be done before a run to help warm up, help with blood flow and and relax muscles for flexibility. Icing is done after to decrease the risks of inflammation and injury.

Sharon, good for you for running 6 miles a day in that heat!

Has this helped you?
