Guide

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Thank you for reaching out to our community for help with your concern about a late period. I hope that I can explain why this might be happening and calm you.

Basically, the menstrual cycle is regulated by a precise balance of hormones. Any change, upset or imbalance in this balance will cause an irregularity, such as a late or missed period.

The most obvious reason is pregnancy. If you have had unprotected intercourse since your last period, and this period is late by at least seven days, take a pregnancy test.

It is possible that you have started the early phase of perimenopause. Some women experience this in their early 40s. Because of fluctuation in estrogen levels, a woman's menstrual cycle becomes irregular. Period can be late or missed.

Excessive exercising, such as training for a marathon, can cause a delay in the start of a period.
High levels of stress can do this as well.

Regards,
Maryann
