Ok I am 48 and my period has been going on now for almost 3 weeks. It is not heavy but it will not stop. Am I sick? What can I do to make it stop?

Anon,

At 48, you are almost certainly in perimenopause (the years before menopause) and one of the common symptoms of this time is irregular hormones, which mess with our cycles in all number of ways.

This happens to a lot of women. You also have to be careful you don't get anemic from blood loss.

I think you should call your doctor and ask her or him about this extra-long period. They may want to check you out for fibroids, cysts or endometriosis. In some cases a D&C is necessary to get the bleeding stopped and (hopefully) get the system back to normal.

Will you do that and come back and update us?

I would go to the doctor and get it checked out and make sure they examine you properly!

Hi, Anonymous. Let's see what we can help you figure out.

So this period has lasted three weeks? Has it all been bleeding, or sometimes is it just spotting?

How old are you? How long have you been having periods?

Are you on any kind of birth control?

Are your periods usually regular?

Have you started taking any new medication recently? Have you been under a lot of stress?

All these things can affect your periods. It's possible you're anemic. Or, depending on your age, you could be starting perimenopause. Some birth control methods can have side effects like this. If you'll answer my questions and get back to us, we can be a lot more help to you. Please write back.
