Why is there white stuff on the side of my tongue?

On the right side of my tongue there is like a white, wavy line. It's not in my tongue, its actually on it (if that makes sense). Yesterday, I ate spaghetti and i noticed it didn't taste normal, so I went to look at my tongue and both sides were red and it burned a little, this morning it was white. Tuesday I gave my boyfriend oral sex for the first time, he claims to not have anything like STDs. I've also been chewing a lot of Big Red chewing gum this week, I don't know what could be the problem, I just want to know what could cause this white, raised line.

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER and thank you for coming to us with your concern.

A diagnosis can only be made after physical evaluation by your primary care physician.

It is possible this might be a case of oral lichen planus. Lichen planus is a rare, recurrent, itchy rash or area of inflammatory eruptions (lesions) of unknown origin characterized by shiny reddish-purple spots on the skin and gray-white ones in the mouth.
With oral lichen planus, there are a network of raised white lines on your tongue that has a lace-like appearance.

Regards,
Maryann
