Will Folvite Tablets delay the periods? Does it change the menstrual cycle?

I am 24 years old female. I am taking Folvite tablets for the past 1 month as advised by the doctor (as me and my hubby are planning for a baby). My menstrual cycle is 26 days usually. Will having Folvite tablets delay the periods? My cycle has crossed 28 days by now. So are there chances of me being pregnant?

Folic acid pills does no harm. Its just a vitamin tablet. Your pain could be due to some other reason..

Hi, Julia,

Welcome to EmpowHer!

Folic acid is simply another name for vitamin B9, which is a vitamin that helps with healthy cell growth and reproduction. It shouldn't be causing you any problems like this.

Since you are feeling hot (like a fever) and have pain in your abdomen, could you be coming down with something? Or is it more like nausea?

Thanks Pat for ur response :)
I'm not luckier this time. I have got my periods :(
But its fine that we have some more days in addition to enjoy.. :)

Pat, I have another question with me. My husband and I are close relatives. How would be its effect on our future baby? Should I go in for some early medications to avoid any birth defects?

Empower,

Exactly how close of relatives are you and your husband? Is your doctor aware of this?

Hi Diane,
Sorry for the delay in my reply..
My doctor is aware that we are married in close relations....
My husband is my mother's brother's son (uncle's son)..

OK, so you and your husband are first cousins, is that correct?

One of the worries about first cousins having children is that both parents already share some of the same blood.

Here is a 2002 University of Washington story that says that actually, the offspring of first cousins actually have fewer genetic defects than many people believe. But that as a couple, the two of you should of course be screened for any genetic screening tests that are regularly offered to your genetic group.

Here's that study:

And here is a New York Times story about this:

I hope that helps!

Hi empower - Taking Folvite tablets should have no impact on your periods. Folvite is also known as folic acid and Vitamin B9. It usually has very few side effects. Some studies have found that folic acid taken by women before they become pregnant and during early pregnancy may reduce the chances of certain birth defects (neural tube defects).

Since your cycle is late it is possible that you are pregnant, but only a pregnancy test can confirm this. Good luck to you and your husband! Will you let us know if you are expecting?

Take care,
Pat
