Ok, so I'm 17 and I started taking birth control in July of 2008, i started off with Yaz then switched to Levora about 6 months ago. I just started a new pack on Friday July 24. When i went on a trip i forgot to take my pack with me and i missed two pills- sunday and monday. today, i took my pill at my normal time. i keep reading that i need to take two today and two tomorrow but i already took one today at my normal time. what are my chances of getting pregnant since i missed two in the first week?
my boyfriend and i had unprotected sex on saturday and sunday

Anon,

Thank you so much for clearing this up. I think this is right:

Saturday: ended pack, called pharmacy
Sunday: Day 1 of new cycle
Monday: Day 2 of new cycle. Got pills, took Sunday pill and Monday pill
Fri and Sat: Days 6 and 7: had sex

You should be protected, Anon. To be super-safe, it would have been best to use a condom those two days, since most birth control instructions recommend another form of birth control for 7 days after two missed pills. But you were right on the line, so I would say the chances of a pregnancy would be very very small.

I am confused as to what pills you took, and which ones you missed, and if you had sex before your new pack (Friday and Saturday before, since you are a Sunday starter), even though you said you had sex after you started the new pack?

Can you answer these questions:
- Did you start your new pill pack the previous Sunday, then had sex Friday and Saturday, then forgot the following Sunday pill?

- Or, did you have sex Friday and Saturday before your new pack, while you were on the inactive pills (it's OK if you did not take them), and then missed that following Sunday's pill (from a new pack)?

Which pills did you take, and which ones did you miss? Did you double-up on Monday to make-up for the missed pill on Sunday?

I can answer one of your questions now: many birth control instructions (be sure to read the patient information brochure with your pills, to be sure this is correct for your specific prescription!!) will say that if you miss one pill, then take it as soon as you remember...that it is not necessary to use a back-up form of birth control (condom). If you miss more than one pill, it is necessary to double-up on pills AND use back-up birth control for the next seven days.

If you are using birth control on a daily basis, then you are having protected sex, even if it is during the inactive pills.

I started my pill pack sunday October 25th 2009 and have taken my pill faithfully everyday since. I did not take it Saturday nite because my boyfriend and I went to a party and it slipped my mind which is totally irresponsible. I usually take my pill 10pm every nite. We had sex about 4am sunday and he finished in me, I took my missed pill about 11am sunday morning and took my pill for sunday at 10 last nite. What are the chances of me getting pregnant I'm freaked out.

Anon,

Please don't freak out. While there is always a higher possibility of pregnancy when you miss a pill, you did the right thing by remembering to take your pill as soon as you remembered and then took the next pill at the right time.

Did your doctor mention to you that if this is your first month on birth control pills, that it's a good idea to practice another form of birth control (like condoms, for instance) until you've finished the first pack of pills? Some birth control pills aren't at their full effectiveness until you've completed a full cycle.

I think the chance that you got pregnant are still very low. But if you are really worried, you should go to the pharmacist and ask for Plan B birth control. You can take it within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse and it will prevent a fertilized egg from implanting. However, it will throw your cycle off, so if you feel you need to do this, you might want to call your doctor's office, tell the nurse what happened, and ask for her or his direction on starting a new pack of pills.

so i'm reading this and i'm going through strangely almost the exact same thing the girl who asked this question is...
your advice is really helpful, alison! thanks!:D

i have a question too though.
like the girl who asked, i missed two pills in a row from monday and tuesday and i'm on yaz. that was on the first week of my pills, and i've been on the pill for a little over a year now. i did the whole "take two pills on one day and two pills the next" to catch up. i had unprotected sex on wednesday and didn't do plan b. i kept taking the pill steadily for about two weeks and half, but i did miss two pills during that time (but not in a row). this week, i've missed two pills in a row again, and i had unprotected sex on sunday. i know sperm can live about 2 days in your body, more if you're cervical mucus is abundant, but i did miss a few pills this month and this is the second time i've missed two pills in a row. should i test? thanks.

As far as taking hormonal contraception while you are pregnant. I've read different conclusions on this. Yes, hormonal contraception may harm the embryo. However, many women who did not know they were pregnant and continued using their pill delivered healthy babies. I am not sure all of the factors that play into "how harmful" it is to take pills while pregnant during first few weeks (or even first month), but I do know it is not recommended.
