Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community.

Prolonged menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), is defined as bleeding that goes beyond a week. Usually, these irregularities occur because of changes in hormone levels, especially estrogen.

While irregular periods can be bothersome, these hormonal changes are common and rarely mean something more serious.

There are some cases when a medical condition could be the cause of abnormal menstrual bleeding.  Possible causes include:

  • Uterine fibroids, non-cancerous growths of the uterus wall
  • Endometrial hyperplasia a thickened endometrium
  • A bleeding disorder
  • Problems with clotting
  • Thyroid functioning
  • Glandular issues
  • Infection
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Uterine polyps

At some point in a woman's life she may experience an irregular periods, even with that said, make an appt with your doctor to check things out.

Be well,

~Gillette
