Q:

Yeast Infection or UTI?

Hi,

I was on my period last week and it seems like I needed to pee constantly. This happens a lot when I'm on my period. It usually stops when I'm off but I still felt like I needed to go very badly a few days afterwards. Hardly any pee came out. It's calmed down now and I don't feel like I have to go as often but I have very think discharge and I feel "clogged up" down there. My discharge is clear/whitish and there's no odor. I don't have any itching or burning. I went to the store today and bought a Monistat 1 and inserted the ovule at night but 4-5 hours later I went to the bathroom and I think the ovule came out. Will it still work or is it not a yeast infection in the first place? Also I won't be able to see my OB/GYN until next Tuesday. Thanks for your help!

Hi sdd08!

I am glad that you got your test results back and it isn't anything serious :-) The medicine should have you up and feeling better soon!

Be sure to keep in touch with any other health or relationship questions you might have!

Best,

Hi sdd08!

Thanks for responding back to me! I am so glad you made it to the doctor! Cranberry juice usually does the trick! I am sure it is nothing too serious!  If it was, he would have probably prescribed you something like and antibiotic if he was concerned.  I am sure your test results will come back great! It might just be your changing hormones! Ahhhh, the joys of being a woman! LOL

Keep me posted on the results in 5 days sdd08!

Best,

Kristin

I received my test results and they told me my cervix was inflamed due to bacteria. So I'm taking doxycycline hyclate for ten days.

Hi sdd08,

Thank you for sharing your question on the EmpowHER community!

I am sure you aren't feeling too great and having to wait till Tuesday must seem like an eternity! I hope I can help in the meantime.

A UTI is caused when bacteria enters your urethra and spreads to your urinary tract. Check out this article for more on UTI's:

https://www.empowher.com/urinary-tract-infection/content/do-i-have-urinary-tract-infection-uti

A yeast infection typically has a lot of itching and since you aren't experiencing that it's tricky to say. Here is a list of symptoms of yeast infections:

https://www.empowher.com/media/reference/vaginal-yeast-infection

As for the Monistat ovule, it's likely that it delivered all the medicine during the night even though you think it might have dislodged. But, then I am not even sure that it will relieve your symptoms without knowing if it is truly a yeast infection or UTI.

The need to urinate badly is a symptom of UTI and there are natural and over the counter methods to help with this. Members of our community swear by Olive Leaf Extract or drinking cranberry juice. There are also over the counter medicines to help relieve symptoms. Again, these are just suggestions until your doctor can accurately diagnose your condition.

The Mayo Clinic has said, "Doctors typically use antibiotics to treat urinary tract infections. Which drugs are prescribed and for how long depend on your health condition and the type of bacterium found in your urine."

sdd08, I hope this helps in the meantime and I am sure your doctor will have you feeling back to normal on Tuesday! Let me know what he or she says.

Best,

Kristin

Thanks for your response. I went to my doctor today and he said to drink some cranberry juice for 10 days and i should be feeling better. He said my urine was very concentrated. Also as far as my white/clear discharge he had to lab work on it. So I won't know what my results are until five days from now. I hope it's nothing too serious.
