Hi!
I guess I sort of have a question for whoever is willing to advise. My best friend has been sexually active for a while but is afraid of going to see a gynecologist. I go annualy and continually try to tell her how important it is.

We are juniors in college but she lives an hour from home and could go to a doctor near her home. She keeps saying that it is not that neccesary but I know it is! Is there any way for me to convince her to go with out stepping on her toes or crossing the boundaries?

Thanks!!

Advocating for a Friend

Hi Me,

You are such a good friend to even come to EmpowHer and ask your question. Clearly, you are concerned for your girlfriends well being.

Do you think shes just afraid to go to the gynecologist? Have you asked her that question?

Some people become paralyzed by fear and tend to do nothing. Maybe she's one of them. If that's the case, tell her you'd be happy to go with her.

Try to get to the root of the problem. Maybe she would feel more comfortable with a female gynecologist. Or, could it be financial burden for her?

If it's financial, then you need to come back and let us know. We can see if we can help her find free or low cost resources in her area.

Please let me know what happens. I'm hoping you can get to the bottom of why she is so unwilling to go. It's all about prevention and wellness and being pro active with her health. Set the example for her. But never give up. Stay on her. Theres no such thing as over stepping your boundaries with someone you care about. She needs to go.

I'm sure you must go for your annual check ups. What made you decide to start getting your annual exam?

Best in health,

Michelle

Female ob/gyn

Hi - Me!

Going to an ob/gyn is daunting for anyone! It can be a bit nerve racking and women can feel very vulnerable. I personally didn't see an ob/gyn until my mid 20s.

I have only ever seen a female gynecologist. I am just not comfortable with a male doc and that's very normal and common! This might be her issue!

Thanks for asking for her and hopefully she will see that an ob/gyn is as important as a regular internist.

There are many free clinics and also clinics that charge on a sliding scale based on income or student status.

I hope she sees a doc soon. You are setting the best example by seeing an ob/gyn yourself!

Student health services

Have you tried the student health services department at your university or college? It may help her to know that other women who are her age are getting checked and may make it a less frightening experience (if that's at the root of her reluctance.)Also, may be you could go with her... just a thought.

My Reply To: Imme

Imme,

Thanks for the great question. The next time EmpowHer interviews a GYN, I'll make sure we remember to put this question in their interview and get it answered.

Thanks for thinking about your friends health.

-Todd
