Annette:
If women are having a lot of trouble, constant issues, pain, a lot of bleeding, perhaps they’ve been diagnosed with endometriosis or other menstrual- related complications, I always suggest that they get a couple of opinions about their situation. And a lot depends on how old they are, where they are in the cycle of wanting to have children, not have children, already done with children, but this is one thing that I have found, particularly with ovarian cancer.
If you don’t need the ovaries and you’re having a lot of problems, you should really talk to doctors about when it’s time to get them out. And my concern there is that many of these menstrual conditions occurred in women who were later diagnosed with ovarian cancer, that was my case. I had several D&Cs, I had a lot of bleeding, a lot of clotting, and that subject was never brought up to me at all, about having a hysterectomy.
So I think that if you’re at a place in your life where it’s something that is a reasonable alternative, I would encourage women to have the hysterectomy.
