Ellen:
I had my last chemo four months ago and I am feeling great! You know you get used to being in chemo and some of the really nice side effects that go with it like not having to worry about your hair and not having to worry about shaving, and that’s the up side of chemo. Then when you get out of chemo, all those things that are a regular nuisance start coming back and I say that I hate them but I am so glad that they are, that I have to shave everyday and do my hair a little bit and color my hair and get back to the normal things.
I have my up days and down days. I have some days that I am still tired that I need to take a nap but mostly I have good days. I’ve been able to travel. In fact I have traveled all through my chemo and after chemo. I have taken some major trips. About a month after my chemo, I took a 10-day trip back to New England and to my summer camp reunion in Maine and it required me to be around a lot of people with a wig in hot summer weather and I decided I wasn’t going to wear the wig the whole time.
People kept asking me why my hair looked so good in this steamy weather and I finally got tired of just telling people so I just kind of whipped the wig off and told people, “Because it’s not mine.” And I think that was a shock to some people but it also opened up the conversation so I could talk about my ovarian cancer and what I had been through and my chemo and how I am doing and opened me up to a whole lot, lot more people who keep in touch with me want to know how I am doing. So it’s been a great experience. It’s been more positive than negative, from even before ending the chemo till now.
