Shelly shares the challenges she encounters as a young woman with type 1 diabetes.

Shelly:
Some of the challenges that I face are just making sure that I am scheduling right because at any time if something goes wrong there’s that added pressure that I don’t want people to know that, you know, I need to take time to leave and go and eat because I am a diabetic, and it’s not always a situation, maybe at work, or it’s not always a situation that I can explain to people why I am doing the things that I am doing.

So sometimes I feel like I am being secretive or like I have to hide it even though I am not, and I think from day-to-day that I struggle with . . . I think growing up diabetic you’re kind of ultra-aware. You’re ultra-aware of your feelings. At least me, I am ultra-aware of my feelings, and I can read other people really well, and I think that it’s made me at least a lot more sensitive to everything around me and fitting into that.

So, I think put more pressure on myself as a diabetic and as a woman and as a member of society to blend in, and sometimes it doesn’t work.
