To be diagnozed with a sexually transmitted illness should, principally, not be different from having a diagnosis like e.g. "the flu". You don't have to be promiscuous to get e.g. a gonorrhea, only being in bad luck. I knew a very young man who was contaminated with AIDS by his very first partner.
I fear that some people keep their symptoms secret because they fear that they are ill from sexually transmitted illnesses and see this as an endurable shame.
