Hi, I have a lap band and can answer this question for you. In the US, insurance companies typically look at a BMI(body mass index) of 30+ with comorbilities . comorbilities typical for overweight people are diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, pain in the joints. It is not the amount of weight as much as what your normal BMI is for your height, weight and gender. There are many sites where you can input your information to figure out your current BMI. I hope this helps.

How overweight do you have to be in order to be considered for bariatric surgery? Do you have to have a special medical condition to qualify?
