My (adult) son woke up this morning feeling body aches and a low-grade fever. Does the old adage, "feed a fever, starve a cold," still hold up? Not really.
Between homemade chicken soup and hot toddies with rum, my mom and grandmother had an arsenal of foods and fluids to combat flu and cold symptoms. There is something behind their home remedies that does hold true. Besides orange juice and spinach, there is a multitude of foods that contain the essential antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that help the body recover as well as ward off future illness.

I feed my kids regardless- they are skinny enough as it is, they don't need a day or two without food!
Right now, two of mine have a virus: high fever, lethargy and vomiting. I am feeding them the BRAT diet - "bananas, rice, apple sauce, toast", I finally gave them plain toasted bagels and apple sauce and will try some bananas soon. I waited several hours for the last vomit session and they seem to be holding it down. They are also being hydrated a lot.
Hopefully this will be the last rotten-weather-kids-sick-a-lot month still November.
