What do you currently do to improve your financial health?!
I have been thinking about taking a financial seminar, and in my quest to find a class, I thought I would share with you what I found. Many universities, banks, credit unions and government agencies and organizations offer free and low-cost financial educational classes or online templates, on everything from: preparing a budget, saving, investing, creating a business plan, preparing taxes...there is even a course on how to teach your preschooler how to save money...
I'll add to this list as I find new resources (and I hope you do, as well!). Here are a few resources I found to help improve yours (and my) financial health:
- U.S. Small Business Association
- Credit Union National Association to locate a credit union near you
- U.S. Financial Literacy and Education Commission
- American Association of Community Colleges to locate a college near you

Years ago, as an investment banker and later manager of a major Broker-Dealer, I gave workshops and seminars specifically geared toward women. As a general rule, wives tend to leave the really important money matters to their husbands, while they take responsibility for daily issues (groceries, household bills, etc.). Then, they have to travel unfamiliar territory if suddenly widowed, and not necessarily emerge unscathed. I saw this happen far too many times.
Because women statistically outlive men, they should be taking charge of their finances, learning as much as possible about investments, insurance, taxes, estate taxes, living wills, etc. so that they can be prepared for life events.
I'm still surprised at how many young women tend to ignore their financial future.
Trivia: some of the most successful investment clubs are women-led.
Good for you for taking the initiative to educate yourself - and, ostensibly, your children. :)
