Last year I suffered a nontraumatic femur fracture of my left femur. In July, 2008 I read an article that described femur fractures identical to mine and a possible link to long term use of Fosamax. Since then I have had a bone scan which shows increased activity in my right femur which could very possibly be a stress fracture. I am very worried about the risk of a fracture occurring in my right femur. I would love to communicate with others who have had this experience. I am also interested in learning about how I can protect myself from this happening again.

Thank you for your information. It is something that needs to be screamed from the rooftops. Women, and I'm sure some men, are hearing their femur snap and thinking they are at fault! This is an atrocity and Merck refuses to acknowledge their irresponsible actions on so many levels!

For your information, my law firm has been handling femur/hip fracture cases against Merck for a couple of years. We have acquired a substantial body of material that points to both reliable studies linking fosamax to these injuries AND evidence that Merck had reason to believe of these consequences especially due to long-term use. At present, we have 5 Fosamax cases in suit against Merck. In our opinion, there is a reason to sue and recover damages. We have handled major drug and product liability cases for decades. You can reach us thru our website at www.ppl-law.com. We are in the process of creating a fosamax femur link on our website that will keep visitors informed of the progress of the litigation and new developments in the scientific knowledge surrounding long-term Fosamax use.

My mother has suffered low impact femure fracture. She was on fosomax to prevent osteoporosis as she was on glucocorticoids for RA. The disease is now called SSBT. Severly suppressed bone turnover. rPTH (forteo) might help in healing. She has nailing done 2 months ago. I am concerned about her other leg as x Ray shows a similar lesion but not defenitive fracture.
September 16, 2009 - 6:35amI hope Merck put this disorder on package insert of fosomax. It is being reported for 4 years and is still not included as side effect.

HI Cee,
Yes, I am on 1200 calcium and 2000 Vitamin D3. The key ingredient the doctor told me was the Vitamin D3 and that any more than 1200 calcium was really a waste of a pill because we can only absorb so much in a day. I take the calcium 600 twice daily. I refuse to take anything else at this point however, there is a new drug going before the FDA for approval soon from Amgen Inc. It would be two injections per year and is suppose to build bone rather than "remodel" it like the existing treatments. Its drug name is Denosumab, but we will see how this comes down the pike. The DEXA scans are not a true measure of bone density in our cases. That is the fallacy of Fosamax. The bone looks like it is there when in fact it is not, but I had one two weeks ago to appease a skeptical doctor and sure enough it came back that I had Osteopenia and not osteoporosis which is obvious with three fractures in five months time! The Fosamax has thrown us into full-blown osteoporosis and nothing less. Vicki

Hi, vsteenma, First, I would like to say that I feel your pain and I will pray for your fast and full recovery. Secondly, I am curious to know if your physician has recommended a calcium supplement and/or another drug for bone strengthening? I only take 2-3 calcium plus D every day. I am going to see a physican in November with my most recent Dexa scan. Apparently, this Dr. specializes in metabolic bone disease. Of course, I am skeptical of any and all drugs since this Fosamax incident. I, too, feel that Fosamax is a sinking ship and it is only a matter of time when it will be taken off the market. Merck has a lot of 'splainning to do, Lucy. Get well soon. Cee
