Please let us know what you find out about your insurance company, and your ability to go to a specialist without a referral. Some insurance companies can help you get to a specialist.
Also, even though you may have the symptoms of sjogren's, it is important to remain open-minded about diagnosis; there is a fine-line between being educated (which you are!) and self-diagnosing (which you also are!). As long as you are open to other possible causes to your symptoms, because the problem can occur with some patients that they no longer pay attention to all of their symptoms to report to the doctor; only the symptoms that match their self-diagnosed condition. Does that make sense? Of course you can tell the doctor you have read about sjogren's and are having many of these symptoms, but it is MORE important to keep a list of your symptoms separate from any self-diagnosed condition, so the doctor can rule out ALL possible causes and conditions, as well as give you a proper diagnosis.
Good luck!

Speakingwings - You need to check your insurance plan. Most require a referral from the designated primary care physician, but some insurance plans do not. If you feel this is going to be an issue you may want to see if your plan has nurse case managers that you can work with to address your needs and get support for the referral. If you encounter many, many obstacles you may even want to consider paying out of pocket for an appointment. It's your health that is at stake, afterall, and as Cary noted delays in proper diagnosis and treatment can be harmful. I know it can be hard to stand up for ourselves but we have to in order to get the best care. Let us know what you do and of your continued progress. Good luck.

October 2, 2010 - 6:52amNo I'm not seeing a rheumatologist never had one to refer me too.But I sure do feel like I have sjogren's.

A rheumatologist would treat Sjogren's, and would be the expert on diagnosing it. I suggest you find one in your area and go for a second opinion. Most insurance covers second opinions, and I think it would be well worth it to go. Good luck.
