New studies show that certain foods protect your eyesight. The American Macular Degeneration Foundation states that macular degeneration due to aging will be six times higher among 65 year olds in 2025 than it was in 1990. Here's how to protect your eyesight through the foods you eat.
- Eat green. Leafy greens are packed with powerful antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, known to protect eye health into the ages. Don't skip breakfast; oatmeal, peaches and whole wheat toast are among low Glycemic Index foods to enjoy.
- Fish eyes are good things. Wild Alaskan salmon is among the fish high in omega-3 fatty acids that help promote eye, and brain, health. Check with your doctor before substituting fish oil, as it is a blood thinner.
- Run for your eyes. Research shows that those who ran more than 2 1/2 miles per day cut their risk of macular degeneration by about 54%.
