share: July is National Hemochromatosis Awareness Month
I just wanted to let others know that July is National Hemochromatosis Awareness Month, and if anyone has experience with this disorder, it would be helpful to hear!
We often talk about deficiencies in our diet, but hemochromatosis is an inherited disorder in which people absorb extra iron from their diet, and there is no efficient way for the body to excrete iron. Eventually, the excess builds up in the liver, heart, pancreas, pituitary and joints, and can cause organ failure over time.
The Iron Disorders Institute says that simple tests can define body iron levels. Is your iron elevated?

I have not heard of this before, thanks for the information.
I have my iron tested annually because vegetarians can be lacking in that department and my check a month ago showed that all was normal.
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone with this disorder too!
