I am a 44 year old female who sufferes from debilitating migraines every 25 days, they last 4 days nonstop, and I end up losing 5 pounds. I am unable to work as a nurse anymore and am unable to care for my family. These migraines occured after my total hysterectomy in 1999, before that I had never even experienced a headache.
I am looking for more information on trying to prevent these horrible episodes.
any info would be greatly appreciated
thank you
lisa

Bad migraines are truly miserable. They are a real specialty area, so I'd urge you to see a migraine specialist, not simply a GP. Do a web search for more information, but here is one site that will help hook you up with a migraine specialist in your state, hopefullynot too far away.

and this site may help also:

I hope you can find some relief soon.

This makes me wonder if you're suffering something hormonally-induced rather than migraines.
I used to have migraines, sometimes still do, but they came on suddenly and without warning. Light, sound, even smells were intolerable. I agree with Sandy that you should seek a specialist and not accept the doctor telling you to just deal with your headaches.
September 30, 2008 - 6:58pmHarder89, I'm so sorry to hear about your struggles. I have a dear friend who is 54 who has suffered with migraines since she went into perimenopause about 10 years. For her, too, they are debilitating, but she has had good doctors who have helped her reduce their frequency and sometimes their effects.
You don't simply have to settle for a doctor who is not well-versed in migraines or who wants you to depend on narcotic-type drugs. Here's a page from the Mayo Clinic that discusses various medications used both to relieve pain and to try to prevent migraines:

Since your migraines started after your hysterectomy and come on such a regular schedule, it would seem almost certain that they're hormonally linked. Are you on a hormone replacement therapy? Did your doctor talk about whether this (or the lack of it) may or may not affect your headaches?
Here's an article about the role of hormones in migraines:

There is also a growing body of knowledge about acupuncture treatment for migraines in this country. Here's an in-depth article on this in Acupuncture Today:

I hope you find a doctor who is more in tune with your needs and get some relief for these headaches. You deserve a break from them. Take care.
