Many of us have been there at some time in our lives.
We go out for the night, drink a little too much, and suddenly the world is a better - and better-looking - place.
The slang-term is 'beer-goggles'. And not only do we tend to find members of the opposite sex more attractive, we also find same sex people that way.
A study from Britain took 84 people and analyzed their reactions to members of the opposite sex. Some of the participants were sober, some had consumed alcohol.
"Both drunk men and drunk women rated the faces as being more attractive than did those who were sober, according to New Scientist magazine.
Surprisingly, the effect was not limited to the opposite sex, as drunk volunteers also rated people from their own sex as more attractive.
Research leader and experimental psychologist Marcus Munafo said alcohol was to blame for twisting our perceptions of attractiveness and focusing us on potential partners in environments conducive to sexual encounters.
Dr Munafo said he wanted see whether the "beer goggle theory" still applied when a person was so drunk they could no longer focus on a face, but he was constrained by study ethics.
Australian psychologist Bill von Hippel, from the University of Queensland, said the ability of alcohol to remove inhibitions was well known but it was "puzzling" that drunk people found their own sex more attractive too.
However, he agreed with other findings in the same magazine which supports the worldwide trend of preferential treatment for attractive people."

I'm sure there are many people who have hooked-up with people they find attractive on an alcohol-fueled night out that they normally would not find good-looking. And while I certainly don't advocate anyone jumping into a sexual relationship while drunk and without prior thought, I have to say I have heard a couple of people I know rather ruefully use the expression "I've never gone to bed with a dog, but I sure woke up with one..." Yikes.
Have you ever had the beer-goggle experience? Have you had even just a glass or two of wine and suddenly found the world a more attractive place?
