For about a month or more the outside bottom of my right foot has been in severe pain. It does not matter if i stand walk or lie down. After about 2 hours on it the pain is about level 10. I am not sure what is causing it.

Dani - While you don't have insurance you do have the option of going to an urgent care or walk-in care clinic for treatment. These services generally are at far lower cost than an emergency room visit and they can prescribe pain medication if needed. The general advice for sprains and possible stress fractures is to rest and avoid placing additional strain on the injured foot so it can heal and to consider using some type of brace for support. I have a similar injury but I'm uninsured until grad school starts September 20! I can't tell if I've strained a tendon or have a stress fracture but it hurts so badly I want to cry. I got it from walking in Boston over the weekend. I was visiting family and didn't know we'd be doing quite that much walking and wore flip flops for 8 miles. I really hope it's only a strain. Does anyone have any pain management techniques? I keep thinking it will get better but it's been almost a week and I'm still in excrutiating pain.
Thanks,

Hello Anonymous!
I would like to second everything that Diane wrote above, from welcoming you to EmpowHer to all of the amazing information that she posted for you. I just wanted to weigh in and let you know that as I was reading your post my first thought was "stress fracture". I've had them and I've had friends and family members have them and the pain is exactly as you describe. I have a friend whose mother-in-law got one just from stepping off a curb sort of funny, so it's not like you need to have a really obvious injury like a fall or something to get one.
It could be another type of injury to the bones and/or ligaments in your foot too. I agree with Diane that a month is more than enough time to live with this. I would love it if you could make an appointment tomorrow to go in and get some X-rays and get this solved and start healing it up. Please post again and let us know what you find out. Big hugs to you, Michelle

Hi, Anon, and welcome to EmpowHer. Thanks for your question!
First of all, I'm really sorry you've had to deal with this for a month. That sort of pain is not at all normal and to endure it for a month. Especially when it's something like your foot, which you use all the time.
I'm sure you've asked yourself this, but before this happened did you perhaps have any sort of injury to that foot, any time when you stumbled or dropped something or just did something awkward and it ended up hurting?
Are you an active person? Do you run, rollerblade, work out?
My initial thought, given the time you've dealt with this and the level of pain you have, is that you may be dealing with a small broken bone, even a stress fracture. Can I ask why it's been a month and you haven't visited a doctor or the ER? Seems like you probably need an X-ray and possibly an ace bandage and some pain medicine at least.
I had a stress fracture in my foot and it also hurt at maybe a 9 on a scale of 1 to 10. It was incredibly painful and it was "just" a stress fracture. But I didn't find out exactly what was going on or what to do about it until they took an X-ray.
Here's an amazing fact: We have 26 bones in our foot. 26!! And even if just one has a stress fracture or a break, it's going to cause you that kind of pain.
Here's a page from the Podiatry Channel that also has illustrations of the structure of the foot:

And here's an enlargement of the side/outside of your foot:

From the way you write about your foot, it sounds like you might have an injury to your 5th Metatarsal Bone, or possibly one of the tendons that connect to it. When you look at that image, is that the area of your foot that hurts?
In case you think this may be the case, here are a couple of good pages on metatarsal stress fractures:

Do you think this might be the case? Can you rest this foot? Do you need help finding a doctor?
