If you only smoked cigarettes on occasion, socially, would you consider yourself a smoker? The answer should be yes. According to a study from the Mayo Clinic, social smoking is on the rise while regular smokers have been on the decrease for the past decade.
Tobacco companies are starting to target the socialites. The main reason is the alluring way to target people to assume that it is not an addiction but rather a necessary social tool. Think about it this way, do you love those awkward quiet moments with another person? No, we all hate that. Now, you can light up a cigarette in order to maintain clarity. This reminds me of the Twix Commercial where there are always men that say something stupid and then shove the Twix in their mouth to maintain their coolness.
As a want to be non-smoker, I am offended that companies would refer to cigarettes as a social necessity. What do you think?
