After being on LexaPro for fifteen years, I tried very hard to get off it slowly. I thought I did it right, but I ended up with major anxiety attacks and am now back on. Anyone else have this experience with SSRIs? Do they stop your body from making seratonin?

Hi Francine:
I'm curious why you are trying to get off Lexapro, is it causing problems while you are on it?
Thanks-
Kelley

Just thought I would try, since I had been on it for fifteen years. Not anxious to put extra meds into my body.

Hi Francine,
Thank you for your question. Any medications that you are on for a long time may have some adverse reactions and you have anxiety is not uncommon. You should certainly go back to your doctor and find a possible outlet which would be to perhaps change to a lower dose of Lexapro in order to help reduce your intake of the drug and let your body take over.
Here is some more information about lexapro from drugs.com, the side effects should be of interest to you http://www.drugs.com/sfx/lexapro-side-effects.html.
Talk to your physician about possible other methods to reduce your intake and become drug free.
Good luck and keep us posted on your journey.
