I have Hashimoto's and take Armour thyroid - I feel that the care given to thyroid patients is so far below adequate, it is laughable. I cannot understand why doctors insist on buying into big Pharma lies and prescribing Synthroid (synthetic) T4 only medications to patients while continuing to use an outdated TSH measurement. And their patients continue to feel like crap - tired, moody, weight gain, depression, etc....
Armour is a far superior and natural (pig thyroid) treatment containing T3 in addition to T4 and trace amouts on T1 and T2. It is also important to measure Free T3 and Free T4 levels and not dose a patient solely based on TSH. And the ever forgotten adrenals - cortisol tests are essential and if your adrenals do not produce adequate amounts of cortisol, you will continue to feel worse despite TSH levels or increases in any medication as your body will not be able to absorb T4, or convert it to the all important active T3 hormone. I am not sure why doctors do not understand this?
I also feel that patients need to be more proactive about their thyroid as well. I see some posts where patients say, 'I have felt like crap, oh well, another 6 months for appointment with Endo.' Well, do something about it - demand an earlier appointment, see another doctor, do your own research and present it to the doctor and expect to have, at minimum, adequate treatment.
