1) Gum disease
Gum (Periodontal) disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults. The process starts when excess amounts of plaque are left on the tooth. The plaque, if left untreated will turn hard and become more difficult to remove. This hardened plaque is called tartar. Tartar becomes difficult to clean, and the more it builds up, the highest risk you have of developing gingivitis. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums where they become red, swollen, sensitive, and can lead to bleeding. If this gingivitis is not treated, it can advance to the periodontitis stage, which leads to infection causing your bones, gums, and tissues which support your teeth to deteriorate. In severe cases, this can lead to the tooth having to be extracted.
2) Cavities and tooth decay
Our teeth are exposed to acids on a daily basis from the food we digest and drinks we consume. Foods that are high in sugar and starches produce more acid. These acids eat away at our tooth’s enamel over time, and can lead to a cavity being formed. Our enamel is the strongest tissue in our body, but even then it can break down and lead to cavities and tooth decay, resulting in missing and lost teeth.
There are many forms of injury that can occur in day to day life. It is estimated that as many as 1 out of 3 boys, and 1 out of 4 girls will suffer some sort of traumatic dental injury before the time they graduate high school. These injuries mostly occur during sporting activities where high levels of physical contact are involves. In Canada, it’s primarily hockey and baseball that leads to missing teeth for the youth.
4) Trauma leading to infection
If you have experienced an injury to your teeth, sometimes the impact is not felt immediately. Teeth can be fractured, chipped, and the gums can experience physical trauma which eventually will lead to infection.
There is a link between diabetes are oral health for your teeth. People with diabetes are more prone to periodontal (gum) disease. A study conducted by a group of researchers in New York discovered that people with type 1 & 2 diabetes aged 50 and up were missing 3 more teeth on average than those without diabetes. Having a high blood sugar level can hinder the delivery of nutrients, and prevent the removal of waste left between the teeth and on the gums.
It is estimated that over 2 million school days and over 4 million work days are lost on a yearly basis due to dental visits and dental sick days. That is a lot of time missed! So, to prevent tooth loss and get those missed days back, we need to take extra precautions.
