The harmful effects of cigarettes are often linked to important topics like lung cancer and cardiovascular issues. But how exactly do they affect your dental and oral health?

As we inhale cigarette smoke, the chemicals and carcinogens fill our mouths. What is not removed through the nose or mouth as we exhale is absorbed in our gums and tissues. According to WebMD.com, these chemicals may affect the connection of bone and soft tissues to the teeth and interfere with the normal gum tissue cells. Dr. Robert Genco, D. D. S. and editor of the Journal of Periodontology, explains how the inhalation of tobacco smoke reduces the amount of oxygen delivered to the gingival tissue, decreasing nutrients and making smokers more susceptible to infections like gum disease.

Skin Melanoma: Clinical Trial for New Drug in Progress

It is hard to imagine how a simple spot on your skin could wreak such havoc if it turns out to be melanoma and spreads throughout the rest of your body. A recent series in the New York Times called “Target Cancer” clearly illustrates how this can happen. The development of a new drug called PLX4032 that is in clinical trials for skin melanoma is presented. We are given the chance to follow Dr. Keith Flaherty as he oversees the use of the drug and the lives of the patients involved in the study.

Watching Your Skin: An Intro to Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Today we look at squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common form of nonmelanoma skin cancer, after basal cell carcinoma. While not an issue if detected and treated early, ignoring squamous cell carcinoma can lead to metastasis to other parts of the body that can cause serious issues. Squamous cell carcinomas, like many other skin conditions, are cause by an overexposure to UV radiation from the sun. These tumors can appear on any part of the body that receives sun exposure, even within the mouth.
