Gene Research Identifies Risk of Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer is a malignant tumor which develops in the colon or the rectum. The American Cancer Society estimates 106,100 new cases of colon cancer, 52,010 in men and 54,090 in women, and 40,870 new cases of rectal cancer, 23,580 in men and 17,290 in women, will be diagnosed this year. (1)

A Father-Daughter Link in Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer in the United States. Most of these cancers begin as a polyp, which is a growth of tissue that starts in the lining and extends into the center of the colon or rectum. An adenoma is a type of polyp which can become cancerous. Early removal of a polyp may prevent advancement of this stage. (1)

A growing body of laboratory and animal evidence as well as epidemiological data shows low levels of vitamin D may contribute to certain types of cancer. Conversely, strong biological and mechanistic bases indicate that vitamin D may play some role in the prevention of colon, prostate, and breast cancers.
