The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance held a seminar on Healthcare Insurance Reform and its impact on women, but especially focused on the ovarian cancer community. There has been so much confusion with the legislation, political posturing and stakeholder screaming that it’s impossible to know what to believe. Fortunately, I learned that once you clear away all the smoke, it all boils down to a few fundamental issues.

Ovarian Cancer: What Would You Do To Lower Your Risk?

Most women don’t think about ovarian cancer. With no family history for roughly 90 percent, they know little about it. Consequently, few ever think to take protective measures that could lower their risk. However, there is something women can do that not only lowers their risk, but also reduces the risk of recurrence. Walk.

"Chemo Brain" Studies Underway

Lisa, a 36-year-old legal analyst, is attempting to return her life to “normal” after a bout with breast cancer. Normally an extremely articulate communicator, Lisa feels increasingly frustrated when she can’t remember a common word, and these days, multi-tasking has become nearly impossible.

Lisa has “chemo brain,” a phenomenon of short-term foggy thinking and forgetfulness that afflicts cancer patients after chemotherapy treatment.

Peripheral Neuropathy as a Result of Cancer

Peripheral neuropathy is a neurological condition involving damage to the peripheral nerves—the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. Unfortunately, ten to 20 percent of cancer patients develop peripheral neuropathy during their course of treatment. While peripheral neuropathy adds an additional strain to a cancer patient's treatment and recovery, the American Society of Clinical Oncology notes that “many people recover fully from the disorder over time, whether it is in a few months or a few years.”
