Help! My Uterus Fell Out

Written by Jennifer Austin on November 18, 2009 - 7:08pm

Whoever said women should age with grace clearly did not understand all the complexities and frustrations of losing your estrogen stores. Yes, hot flashes are annoying and sleeping less takes getting used to, but saggy pelvic organs are an entirely different beast.

The Endometriosis Fix: Contraception?

Written by Jennifer Austin on October 31, 2009 - 3:16pm

If you were sexually active in the 1970’s, you might remember the Dalkon Shield. A real lemon of contraceptive methods, the poorly designed T-shaped device allowed bacteria from the vagina to ascend into sterile uterine ground. The Shield was a VIP invitation for pelvic disease.

Who Needs A Symptom Diary?

Written by Annette Leal Mattern on October 28, 2009 - 5:40pm

Until recently, doctors didn’t really give much credence to women’s long lists of complaints. And if we were indistinct, well we probably came off as PMS-afflicted harpies.

My Introduction to Menopause: Menopause vs. Perimenopause, and Hysterectomy Alternatives

Written by Christine Jeffries on October 26, 2009 - 8:36pm

This is first in a series of articles I will be writing looking at Menopause. While I am probably still a number of years from experiencing “the change” myself, I am hearing more and more of friends undergoing treatments related to Menopause and complications of Perimenopause, so perhaps I should be paying better attention.

Recovering From Your Laparoscopy

Written by Shaina Gaul on September 25, 2009 - 2:54pm

When approaching any type of surgery, you usually gloss over the details of recovery – I know I did. It’s kind of like the list of side effects on pharmacy inserts; we don’t think about them until they actually happen to us. But after I underwent my first laparoscopy, I was surprised by my recovery period and what all it entailed. I therefore want to share my story with others, so that they won’t be shocked like I was.

What to Expect During Your Laparoscopy: Part II

Written by Shaina Gaul on September 20, 2009 - 6:13pm

As I looked around the operating room, I was struck by the technicality of it all. The room itself was rather large, and I could see a bevy of machines, lights, and tools.

Johanna’s Law: The Gynecologic Cancer Education and Awareness Act

Written by Annette Leal Mattern on September 18, 2009 - 4:07pm

I never met Johanna, but I had the opportunity to meet her sister, Sheryl, at an Ovarian Cancer National Alliance conference as she was rallying support for a bill she crafted in her sister’s name. Its purpose: create a national campaign “to increase the awareness and knowledge of health care providers and women with respect to gynecologic cancers.”
