Facts on Stage 2 Breast Cancer - Treatment & Stage 2 diagnosis from Dr. Harness, Pres American Society of Breast Surgeons.
Dr. Jay Harness:
Stage 2 breast cancers can be any size breast cancer except the very large tumors and the lymph nodes are positive so the difference than between stage 1 and stage 2 is primarily the spread to even one lymph node and/or you can have a larger tumor but no spread to the lymph node. So, that gives you stage 2.
In most stage 2 cancers it is not only involving surgery, it may involve radiation therapy, but often chemotherapy is involved with stage 2 cancer. Typically not always, but typically chemotherapy is not involved with stage 1 breast cancer.
Bio:
Jay K. Harness, MD, FACS is recognized nationally and internationally for his work in the fields of breast and endocrine surgery. Over his career, he has established three multi-disciplinary breast centers including the nation’s first academic multi-disciplinary at the University of Michigan in 1985. In 2003, Dr. Harness established the St. Joseph Hospital Comprehensive Breast Center in the city of Orange, California, which is, located Orange County. Over the years, Dr. Harness has held various academic appointments including at the University of Michigan where he attended medical school and did all of his surgical training as well as at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, the University of California, Davis, the University of California, San Francisco, and now currently at the University of California, Irvine.
Dr. Harness is the immediate past-President of The American Society of Breast Surgeons and is President-elect of Breast Surgery International. He has also served as Chair of the Board of Directors of The American Society of Breast Surgeons, Secretary-Treasurer and President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons. Dr. Harness is a member of the Medical Advisory Board of EmpowHer. He is well-published with 80 articles and book chapters in the medical literature. He has also been the lead editor of two textbooks: Breast Cancer-Collaborative Management (1988) and Ultrasound and Surgical practice: Basic Principles and Clinical Applications (2001).

What a stressful time for you -- learning you have breast cancer during what should be a happy time of approaching the delivery date of your baby. Given that you mentioned you have stage 2 breast cancer would imply that perhaps surgery has already been completed?? iIf so, then anticipate beginning chemo very shortly after the baby is born. You are not alone as there are many young women who also have been diagnosed with breast cancer during their pregnancy. As a matter of fact, there is an organization called Pregnant with Cancer. The membership are all women diagnosed with some form of cancer while pregnant. The majority of these women had/have breast cancer. If you are not in the hands of a comprehensive breast center that is part of an NCI designated comprehensive cancer center, seek one out. This is the type of facility that will be experienced in treating women who are diagnosed during pregnancy.

My Aunt had to have Kemo with stage1 breast cancer..I never knew that was out of the ordinary...
