Pam shares helpful advice for parents with type 1 diabetic children.

Pam:
You just have to step up and do it. You have to be in contact with the school on a regular basis. I have talked to the principal. I went in on my very first day and I said, "I need to set up an appointment with the principal, with the teacher, and with the school nurse," because it’s all that have to be aware of what the signs are.

I had gone through and filled out cards for the teacher themselves as well as the school nurse for like extra numbers to get a hold of me. "I need for you to be able to get a hold of me and contact," and also a card to give signs. And when Cody starts to change, you know, like mood or signs to be aware of, if he is having issues with his diabetes that he might not even pick up on himself.

So you just have to go out there and just, you have to step up for your child, no matter what. It’s a matter of life or death, really, and if you don’t do it, they can suffer the consequences later.
