Pam:

Hi, I am Pam, and I advocate for my son Cody who is a type 1 diabetic.

When he was 2, we had gone to an amusement park, and unfortunately I have lived with diabetes like all of my life. My father was diabetic and I had kind of seen some of the symptoms and the signs, and we’d gone to an amusement park, and he had been drinking like nonstop, like just 32 ounces and a half hour later he was thirsty, and it was just, kind of just weird, you know, all that stuff.

So the next morning, we actually, I called the doctor and I said, “I need to get him tested for diabetes.” He had only been into the doctor two weeks prior for a well check-up and everything had supposedly been fine, so the doctor was like, “You know, we just saw you, but whatever. We’ll just, to appease you we will test him,” and he came back a couple of hours later, very apologetic, and immediately put Cody in the hospital because his blood sugar at that time was about 500.

By the time we got him to the hospital that night he was up over 1000, and then we did the training and everything for a couple of days of that. So, it was kind of me that had kind of noticed the signs and diagnosed him from previous experience.
