Dr. McLaughlin:

Type 1 diabetes generally refers to autoimmune diabetes, and so the body attacks its own cells that make insulin, and eventually they stop producing insulin. While the definitions have changed over the years, the current definition relies upon the patho-physiologic process by which the cells are destroyed and become non-insulin secreting.
