Dr. McLaughlin:

Type 2 diabetes is contributed by genetics, approximately 50%. Another 25% is due to body weight, and another 25% is due to activity level, and the risk of diabetes goes up with age, and in fact it's not thought that it's aging per se as much as it is changes in body weight and activity level that occur with age.
