High Insulin Levels May Impact Postmenopausal Breast Cancer Risk

I love being a naturopathic physician because I focus on teaching people that health is a whole body process that is being created every day. I spend time with my patients looking at how to use their symptoms to identify imbalances before they becomes full-fledged disease processes.

It is always easier to correct an imbalance before it becomes a disease that might cause irreversible damage to the body. In my practice I find that one of the biggest imbalances that has a huge impact health is insulin resistance. I think it is important to mention that insulin is released in response to high glucose levels in the blood. Elevated insulin levels occur when the cells of the body start ignoring the normal insulin so the pancreas starts releasing more and more insulin to get the cells to pay attention to insulin in the body. Insulin resistance has been correlated to many diseases like diabetes, insomnia, or heart disease.

Now there is some evidence to suggest that insulin resistance can impact risk for breast cancer in postmenopausal women. In the December issue of International Journal of Cancer, a research report stated that elevated insulin levels may increase the risk of breast cancer in women who are in menopause. The researchers also looked at data from the Women's Health Initiative studies and found that women with the highest levels of insulin in their blood more than twice as likely to have higher risks for breast cancer as compared to women who had the lowest levels of insulin levels in the blood.

This report opens the door for more studies to understand how increasing levels of insulin impact our health on more levels than just diabetes. It confirms what we already know that one body system can impact other body systems. As we look at treating the underlying cause of the problem and not just the symptoms we can start healing our bodies from the inside out!
