Patricia, who was diagnosed at age 13, shares her experience with diabetes.
Patricia:
Hello, I am Patty Glass and I’ve had diabetes for almost 48 years. When you’re diagnosed in September of 1960 at 13 years old, it’s a big awakening, and it's something that you have to learn early and quickly to take good care of yourself.
If you don’t take good care of yourself, you end up with major difficulties and problems, and I decided early on that I needed to do what they required in order to do the best that I could, and I worked very hard to learn everything I could about diabetes to learn the good treatments, the best care.
It’s not been always easy; it’s a disease that you're never away from. Every minute of your life, you are thinking about what you have to do to take care of yourself. It ties hand-in-hand with diet intake, whatever medication you’re taking, and the wonder of wonders, in 1975 when they began having the blood-glucose monitoring, being able to do that, that has been the best development of our age.
It truly tells you where you are. It identifies exactly what you need to do in order to monitor your disease process and to take good care of it. I aim to keep my sugars in tight control. It’s not easy to do; sometimes you end up with elevations and extreme lows, but that’s just part of the game and you learn how to deal with it.
