According to the American Diabetes Association, the incidence of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes is on the rise. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Researchers suggest that behavior still seems to influence whether a person with the genetic predisposition will actually develop type 2 diabetes. For this population, changes in diet and lifestyle may be enough to prevent the disease.
